Abstract

Work is currently being undertaken on two research projects which are developing new concepts for transport planning such as “Complete Mobility” which uses ideas from the successful retailers and online stores and applies themes such as incentivisation to transport and mobility in cities. Both projects are being undertaken in Birmingham; firstly a business case for “Complete Mobility”, a research review looking at use and effectiveness of incentives in achieving travel behaviour change to more sustainable transport modes. As part of the research a questionnaire survey on attitudes to incentives in Birmingham was undertaken. Secondly, “Outsmart” a European funded project which looks at incentivistaion elements to promote sustainable travel and to provide efficiency and convenience benefits for both transport providers and users. By using new smart device technology, travellers in the Birmingham will be able to access more accurate and up-to-the-minute information about their planned or on-going journeys and this will include journey times, costs, discounts as well as carbon and calorie counters. The discounts are designed to encourage travellers to walk and cycle more in the area to improve their health, cut pollution and congestion. Plans are now being made to test the content and capability of the new service in the SW sector of Birmingham. If successful, the service should stand a good chance of becoming the blueprint for travel information across the whole of Europe. Both projects are almost complete and the paper will bring together the two pieces of research currently being undertaken and draw conclusions from the research and report on how travel behaviour can be influenced to enable “Complete Mobility”.
