This paper aims to evaluate the technical and financial efficiencies of Brazilian container terminals. We established the efficiencies rankings and the terminals’ break-even-point was calculated.
Container terminals play a central role in the worldwide distribution of goods, being an essential element for the most supply chains (VAN ASPEREN, BORGMAN e DEKKER, 2013).The containers’ handling in Brazilian terminals has been growing in the past 5 year. For instance, from 2012 to 2013 it increased approximately 7% (ABRATEC, 2014).
So, given the importance of container handling activity for Brazilian economy, it becomes relevant to study and understand how resources are used and the efficiency of these terminals. Thus, this paper aims to evaluate the technical and financial efficiencies of Brazilian container terminals. Initially, a bibliographic research was done in order to understand the handling activities on container terminals, the financial and technical efficiencies concepts and the variables related to it.
After that, data was gathered based in ports reports. So, the technical and financial efficiency calculated to Brazilian container public terminals.Tecon Santos, Convicon, Tecondi, Rodrimar, Libra Rio, SepetibaTecon, Tecon Rio Grande e Tecon Salvador were select for this study because of the data availability.
At the end, we established the technical and financial efficiencies’ rankings that allow us to analyze and compare the two types of efficiency of each terminal. Besides, the terminals’ break-even-point was calculated.
We can conclude that the terminals with better technical efficiency are not necessarily those with better financial efficiency and vice-versa. Then, this paper is relevant since it allows us to identify terminals’ weaknesses, making possible develop actions to improve their performance. Besides, it helps decision-makers to manage future investments and improvement actions.
