Abstract

The Transport Department of the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the Consorcio de Transportes de Madrid, the Public Transport Authority in the Region of Madrid, have carried out a research intended to analyse present and potential park-and-ride demand in the Madrid Metropolitan Area.

This study is part of TransPrice, a project financed under the Transport area of the IV Framework Programme of the European Commission. One of its workpaekages deals with research in travel behaviour when implementing pricing policies and it includes stated preference surveys in eight different European cities. The main results for each city and cross-site comparisons among them are presented in another paper (see Ghali, 1997).

This paper will therefore concentrate on Madrid experience presenting:

* a description of Madrid mobility patterns affecting park-and-ride

* park-and-fide present situation in terms of supply and demand

* local analysisrelated to the SP exercise -not included in Ghali (1997)

* conclusions related to park-and-ride potential to reduce car use in Madrid
