Abstract

Strathclyde Passenger Transport has two roles, the Authority who are responsible for transport policy and the Executive who are responsible for the implementation of that policy. It is responsible for an area of the west coast of Scotland from Girvan in the south to Oban in the north and encompasses twelve local authority boundaries with a population of 2.5 million.

Strathclyde Passenger Transport has an annual budget in excess of £72m and is responsible for the provision of the following services :-

* Infrastructure comprising of 10 bus stations, over 10,000 bus stops and 4,000 bus shelters in the area

* Public transport information.

* Subsidised bus services.

* Subsidised rail services.

* Operation of Glasgow underground railway.

During the consultation process carried out by the former Slrathclyde Regional Council during the writing of their Integrated Transport Strategy document "Travelling in Strathclyde", there was considerable support for the development of improved public transport information systems. As a result of this support the Regional Council decided to include the provision of a real lime information system, as a demonstration project, into its capital program for the period 1992/1997.

This paper will describe the process used to arrive at the final system specification and also at the implementation of that system, its success or failure, the initial pubfic reaction generated since the system went live and the plans to extend the system off street.
