Abstract

The Millennium Exhibition(MEX) is to be held on the Greenwich Peninsula in South-East London. It is scheduled to operate dally from 31 st December 1999 until at least the end of 2001, though if demand warrants it will remain open for longer. Opening hours will be from about 1000 until 2300 hours.

The number of visitors likely to come to MEX is estimated at 10 million. About half of these are expected to stay overnight in the London area either in hotels or with friends and relatives, with the remainder making a day trip from home. As with any kind of trip, the distance between the exhibition and home will clearly have some deterrent effect, and so the probability of a trip to MEX will be greater for Londoners than for those living further away. 20% are likely to be visitors from abroad, probably combining the exhibition with visits to other attractions in London.

The number of visitors who can be accommodated on the site at any one time will be approximately 40,000. The total of 10 million visitors in the Millennium year will be achieved by spreading them over a large number of days, through a strategy of careful pricing and ticketing.
