Abstract

WS At!tins has been at the forefront of recent moves to improve the urban environment and to facilitate regulation of town centres through improving the facilities for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists as a component of balanced transport strategies. This paper reports on recent projects where three town centres with totally different characteristics have been investigated with the common objective of enhancing the environment by means of better traffic management measures.

The town centres described in this paper are: The Strand, one of the most important locations in the City of Westminster, where the proposals have recently been implemented; Wandsworth Town Centre, where a package of proposals has gone through the feasibility stage and is being considered by the Council; and Aldershot Town Centre, where a comprehensive transport strategy has been prepared to revitalise the town centre for the next Century.
