Abstract

This paper summarises some of the findings from the author's doctoral research, (Hargreaves, 1996). This research used household interviews to investigate residents' preferences for traffic calming. These interviews presented respondents with traffic calming options and a list of the effects that traffic calming would have on their streets. This paper firstly describes the streets studied and the traffic calming options. It then briefly describes the methodology. The results summarise respondents' preferred options, the stability of their preferences over time, and the effects that frequently influenced their choice between the options.
