Abstract

This paper reports the first results of a study in progress for the set up of an assignment model to extraurban road networks to be used as component of a DSS for the strategic planning of the Italian transport system at national scale (Nuzzolo et al., 1995; Cascetta, 1997). The general assignment procedure of the DSS is reported in fig.1: link flows, due to extraprovincial mobility of passengers and freight vehicles, are obtained using three assignment subprocedures in sequence: two relative to cars, on medium-long distance (>150 kin) and on short distance, and one relative to freight vehicles; the flows generated by intra-provincial mobility are preloaded to the links. In this paper we pay attention on the assignment of O/13 matrix relative to freight vehicles. The next paragraph presents an overview on different types of approaches used for this kind of problem and that are related to the principal theoretical topics: the path choice model and the generation of the path choice set. The following part of the paper describes a pseudo-dynamic assignment model with C-Logit path choice model, being tested for the Italian road network.
