Abstract

To build an infrastructure basis to support economical growth, the Hungarian motorway and expressway network needs rapid development. As a result of restructuring in the economy the relative role of road traffic continuously increases in Hungary. After some temporary decline (from 1989 to ~1995) road traffic flows also began to increase. On the other hand there are serious conflicts with the future development of motorways and expressways. Due to the new financing concept, tolls have been introduced on certain - old and new - motorways. This fact caused major political (and social?) problems. This paper analyses the facts in the present situation, makes a brief overview on related international experience and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of future scenarios.
