Abstract

This paper describes the outcome of a research project with the aim of developing a framework for signing and marking of horizontal curves on rural roads.

The project is carried out by the Danish Road Directorate in co-operation with the French SETRA-CSTR and CETE Normandie Centre. The Dutch institute TNO has furthermore contributed by carrying out a minor simulator test.

The project is a part of the SAFESTAR project, which is related to the 1994-98 European Research Programme TRANSPORT within the Fourth Framework Programme.

The study presented in this paper consists of several sub-tasks:

* Development of a model to classify horizontal curves into a number of danger categories

* Development of a signing and marking concept for each danger category

- Pre-test of 2 marking types (road studs and profiled centre- and edge lines)

- Simulator test of four alternatives for the signing and marking concept

* Full scale test of final signing and marking concept of 7 curves in France, 6 curves in Denmark
