Abstract

This survey was conducted within the framework of the ESTEEM project (European Scenarios on Transport-Energy-Environment for Metropolitan Areas) which is part of the European Commission DG XII JOULE-THERMIE programme.

The purpose of ESTEEM is to adjust and validate an integrated chain of models of the interactions between land-use, transport and environment, and to apply it to some large European cities, among which Brussels. In particular, an integrated land-use/transport model of Brussels has to be calibrated and applied, and the TRANUS software (integrated land-use/transport modelling), developed by Prof. T. de la Bah'a, was selected for that purpose.

In the case of Brussels, the application of the integrated land-use/transport model must make it possible to assess the impacts of the implementation of a new Regional Express Railway (RER), linking the central urban area to the periphery : short-term impacts on modal choice; long-term impacts on residential location choice (the RER inducing more households than at present to choose the suburbs at the expense of the central urban area).
