Abstract

Poland is situated in the center of Europe between the Baltic Sea and the Carpathian Mountains, on a plain where historically formed transportation routes from Western to Eastern and from Northern to Southern Europe are intersecting.

For all Europe, Poland is a very important transit area. Therefore, the Polish road national network and especially sections of international, E-roads are of high importance in developing the European transportation system. The above conclusion had been underlined by the Second Pan-European Transport Conference held on Crete in March 1994 and was confirmed by the Third Conference in Helsinld in June 1997. From ten Trans-E~opean Transport Corridors, four are running through Poland i.e.:

- Corridor 1 Tallinn - Riga Kaunas - Warszawa/so called Via Baltica

- Corridor 2 Berlin - Warszawa - Moscow

- Corridor 3 Berlin/Dresden - Wroclaw - Katowice - Kiev

- Corridor 6 Gdansk - Katowioe - Zilina/Bmo
