Abstract

The provision of sufficient capacity on the UK rail netwox:k is arguably the biggest challenge facing the rail industry today. At a time of growth not seen for 50 years the industry is in serious danger of falling short on the verge of its greatest triumph.

Nowhere is this issue more acute than in the opportunity for freight on rail. For so long the Cinderella of the rail business, the last three years have seen an explosion of confidence in freight not observed since the golden age of rail over 70 years ago. Freight operators, supported by the Govemment, are looking to triple their business in ten years. Will the industry rise to the challenge?
