Abstract

Ramp metering controls traffic on an entry slip road to a motorway with a view to achieving one or more objectives:

* improved merge behaviour;

* smoother main carriageway flow; and

* reduced traffic flow breakdown.

Control is achieved by using traffic signals whose red and green times are chosen in response to current traffic conditions.

This paper has three purposes:

* to present in some detail the details of the ramp metering scheme recently introduced on the M8 in Glasgow;

* to describe the evaluation of the Glasgow scheme and the results obtained; and

* to compare the Glasgow scheme with the earlier implementation on the M6 motorway in terms of control philosophy, implementation and impact.
